Walk the floor at any security conference in 2026 and you’ll find roughly 200 vendors all claiming to be the “next-generation” solution for phishing. The reality is that phishing protection isn’t a single product — it’s a small stack of complementary tools that each catch different attacks. A small business that buys one tool and assumes it’s protected is making the same mistake as someone who buys a front-door lock and leaves the back door open.

This guide breaks down the phishing protection software categories that actually matter in 2026, the leading vendors in each category, and the stack ClearMax recommends for a typical Nashville small business.

The four categories of phishing protection software

Every legitimate phishing protection tool on the market falls into one of four categories. You need three out of four to be well-defended. Four out of four is ideal.

CategoryWhat it doesStops what
Secure email gateway / API-based email securityFilters inbound mail for phishing, BEC, malwareBulk phishing, spear phishing, BEC
URL rewriting / time-of-click scanningRe-scans links the moment a user clicksWeaponized links that were clean at delivery
DNS filteringBlocks known-bad and newly registered domains at network layerCredential harvesters, malware C2
Security awareness + simulated phishingTrains users, measures phish-prone rateSocial engineering, QR phishing, vishing

Skip any of these and you leave a specific attack type uncovered. The good news is all four combined cost less than a single cyber insurance premium increase.

Category 1: Email security (the foundation)

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace ship with baseline spam and malware filtering. That’s not enough in 2026 — the baseline catches obvious bulk phishing but routinely misses BEC, brand impersonation, and spear phishing. You need a dedicated tool layered on top.

The main players and what they’re actually good at:

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 — The best value if you’re already on M365 Business Premium or E3/E5. Solid link rewriting, attachment sandboxing, and the anti-phishing policies are genuinely good. Weakness: BEC detection is okay but not market-leading.

Abnormal Security — The current gold standard for BEC and account takeover detection. Uses behavioral baselines per user and catches “CEO wants you to buy gift cards” attacks that signature-based tools miss. Pricier but worth it for any business that moves money via email.

Proofpoint Essentials — The SMB version of enterprise Proofpoint. Excellent bulk phishing and malware catch rates. Feels a little old-school in the admin UI but the detection is rock solid.

Mimecast — Strong all-rounder, particularly good at URL rewriting and attachment protection. Popular with regulated industries.

Avanan / Check Point Harmony Email — API-based, plays nicely on top of M365. Good for layering without replacing your MX record.

Category 2: Security awareness and phishing simulation

Training software is where most programs fail — not because the tools are bad, but because annual compliance training doesn’t change behavior. The tools that work deliver short, frequent, relevant content.

KnowBe4 — The market leader by volume. Enormous content library, solid phishing simulator, fair pricing. Criticism: some of the content feels dated if you’ve been on it for years.

Hoxhunt — The behavioral-science-first challenger. Micro-trainings, gamification, measurable reduction in phish-prone rate. Our current favorite for clients who are serious about changing behavior.

Infosec IQ — Good value, clean admin UI, decent content. Solid second-tier option.

Curricula / Huntress Managed Security Awareness Training — Short, video-based, story-driven. Users actually watch it. Good for small teams where you don’t need enterprise reporting.

Category 3: DNS filtering

DNS filtering is the cheapest, highest-leverage phishing control you can deploy. When a user clicks a phishing link, DNS filtering can block the request before the browser ever loads the malicious page.

Cisco Umbrella — Most mature, best threat intelligence, highest price.

DNSFilter — Fast, clean UI, excellent SMB pricing. Our default pick.

Cloudflare Gateway — Free tier for small teams, solid technology.

Webroot / Perch DNS Protection — Bundled with a lot of MSP stacks, fine but not exceptional.

Category 4: Browser isolation (optional but powerful)

Remote browser isolation (RBI) runs suspicious links in a disposable cloud browser so any malware or credential harvester can’t reach the user’s machine or session cookies. Historically enterprise-only, but prices have dropped.

Cloudflare Browser Isolation — Best price-to-value, easy to deploy.

Menlo Security — Pioneered the category, still the deepest integration, enterprise pricing.

Island — Technically an “enterprise browser” but overlaps heavily with isolation use cases.

For most SMBs, RBI is nice-to-have. Get the other three categories right first.

The ClearMax recommended SMB stack

For a 25-person Nashville small business, here’s the stack we deploy and why:

ToolCategoryWhy
Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2Email security (baseline)Already bundled with most M365 plans, solid protection
Abnormal Security or AvananEmail security (layered)Catches BEC that Defender misses
HoxhuntAwareness + simulationBest behavior-change outcomes
DNSFilterDNS filteringCheap, fast, catches clicked links

Total cost: roughly $18–28 per user per month for complete phishing protection. Add managed monitoring and response and you’re at $35–50 all-in.

What to avoid

Stand-alone “AI phishing detectors” with no company behind them. The category has attracted a lot of fly-by-night startups. Stick to vendors that have been around at least three years and have SOC 2 reports.

Anything sold on fear alone. If a sales call is 80% horror stories and 20% product, you’re being marketed to, not sold a tool.

Buying email security twice. If you’re on Defender Plan 2 and then buying a full replacement gateway, you’re probably overpaying. Layer API-based tools instead.
